Sick During the Holidays

During the holiday season, it seems like there are always a few unlucky individuals that get sick. This year, I was the unlucky person. A few days ago, I had a gross stomach virus. Fortunately, I got over it fairly quickly. I want to share some things that helped me and hopefully they will help you get healthy before Christmas parties/dinners.

1. Drink Fluids

This is probably the most important (and obvious) step if you are sick. It is really common to become dehydrated from a stomach virus or other sickness. Drinking tons of water will restore balance to your body and will reduce fatigue. I became dehydrated from my stomach bug and the thing that made me feel almost 100% better was drinking almost excessive amounts of water.

2. Rest

This is an obvious one, but people forget to actually do it. Stress will make everything worse. You need to spend the day lying down. I avoided social media when I was resting and this allowed me to take a beneficial nap. If you have to work, I suggest lying down immediately after your shift is over. If you have a fever though, you shouldn’t be around people and it’s probably a good idea to avoid school/work. Thankfully, most people have winter breaks or are able to take time off this time of year.

3. Use Remedies/Medication

I actually avoided medication when I was sick just because I had a stomach bug and didn’t want to have more nausea. If you have a cold though, you should be proactive in treating it especially at this time.

When I am feeling sick, I start incorporating more ginger and turmeric into my food. These are known to be antibacterial and anti-inflammatory.

If your symptoms are getting worse, please go see your physician. It is fine to take medicine from time to time. It just shouldn’t be your first line of defense.

4. Carb Up

Your body loves carbs (mostly in the form of fruits, veggies, and rice). Carbs give us quick energy and this is extra necessary when we feel sick. I’m not talking about candy or white bread. But rice, fresh fruit, and whole grain based bread/pasta.

I couldn’t eat for 24 hours because of my stomach virus. Once I was able to eat again, I was craving whole foods. I let myself eat until I was full (I didn’t binge eat even though I was extremely hungry). Eating simple whole foods, mostly fruits and veggies, and whole grains let me regain my health.

5. Have a Good Mindset

This is another tip people hear all the time. It’s hard to be positive 100% of the time. If you are stressed out and negative all of the time though, you are more likely to get sick and more likely to stay sick longer. Stress affects your heart, your immune system, and your cortisol levels. It is just better for your overall well-being if you try to be more calm. Let your family know that you are sick and hopefully they will cheer you up.

While I was sick, I just tried to focus on resting and I didn’t dwell on how bad I felt. I think this is one of the reasons, I felt better so quickly.

Thanks for this post. Just came back from a vacation sick. I think it is really a matter of pushing myself to hard. Your tips come in handy, especially the rest, water and natural remedies. I believe I will be better in no time. This is a great post.
